Converting Your Garage into Liveable Space: Important things to Consider

People love expanding their homes. They do this to maximize their living space or simple to add a new one. However, not all people have homes with extra spaces. Some may have maxed it out. If they plan to make additions like a new room or a patio, they may not be able to push through with the project. However, there is always one perfect solution. That is to convert unused or misused spaces at home.

One of the convertible spaces is the garage. Some people may have utilized this portion of the house efficiently for their cars. However, if you have not gotten many cars and what you have is an old clunker, may be its practical to use the garage into a livable space. Not to insult your old baby cars but if you use your space wisely, you can improve the beauty and functionality of your home. Moreover, this can add more value to it.

Besides, you probably have a garage filled with boxes of old treasures. Perhaps they may be just one of those things you could not throw away but you never used anyway. If this is the case, you’re just paving way for dust and dirt to build up. And if you have kids at home, eventually they could catch asthma for it. For sure, you have not maintained the place either.

So if you want to create a better place for yourself and your family, you can simply convert your homes into a livable space. Extend your living rooms or make an entertainment room. Create a wonderful sunroom that will surely make your wife happy. On the other hand, you can make it into a patio with enclosures. This will surely turn your home into a relaxing haven.

Yes, it can get pretty exciting. The quality of your additions makes the conversion worth having. But as much as you want to transform your garage now to a lovely living space, you may have to look into few things. Here are some of them:

1. If you have tons of stuff in your garage, they may get in the way of conversion. Since you no longer use them and they may be well treated as junk, you have to dispose them. However, some of the items may be hard for you to just throw away. Well here is what you can do: try recycling them. If you cannot find any good use for them, a better option would be to sell them. Set-up a garage sale and earn more money for your project. If in the end not everything will be sold, give them away to charitable institutions.

2. Bear in mind that a garage may be detached or attached. Therefore, decide what to do with the space. Make sure it is practical for the kind of garage that you have. This is important as this has an impact on your convenience upon usage of the space.

3. Think of the changes that needs to be done that can affect your budget. Since garage is not usually properly insulated, and that they have no connection to a home’s HVAC systems, you might have to include them on your costing. Aside from that, if certain structures turned out to be degrading, you may have to tear the whole place apart and start from scratch. So you really have to be prepared financially.

4. Before any construction could take place, it is wise to check any regulations and building codes. You must also consult your Homeowner’s Association about the conversion.
